Traveling with strangers is normal now — hostels, group treks, dive boats and travel apps all run on it. What separates a great trip from a bad story is almost never luck. It's a short set of rules applied consistently, before anything is booked.

Before you commit

• Video call. Non-negotiable. Faces, backgrounds and hesitations carry information text does not.

• Meet in daylight, in public, in a place you chose — for a first meeting or a test day trip.
• Tell someone at home: names, photos, accommodation, dates, and a daily check-in time.

Money

• Never advance money to someone you haven't met. Every scam in this category starts with a booking someone else 'already paid for'.
• Book your own transport and your own first night, in your own name.
• Split live in a shared tracker; settle daily, not at the end.
• Carry a backup card stored separately from your wallet, plus enough cash for a night and a taxi.

On the trip

• Keep your phone charged and your live location shared with one person at home.
• Have your own room key or your own bed booking wherever practical.
• Set a check-in cadence with your travel partner too — both of you should know when the other is overdue.
• Keep a photo of your passport, visa and insurance in an offline folder and in cloud storage.

You should always be able to leave. If you can't, that's the problem — not the reason you want to.

Trust your exit plan

An exit plan is not pessimism; it's what lets you relax. Know where the nearest consulate is, keep enough funds for an unplanned flight, and decide in advance that discomfort is a sufficient reason to leave. You never owe a stranger the rest of the itinerary.
